In order to become a famous pirate, one must increase their Chivalrous Spirit (男気) rating (known as Swashbuckler in the English localization). Actions like running away from battles will affect your Chivalry rating, but throughout the game there are choices you can make that will influence your reputation.

A crew can only be recruited once Vyse becomes a captain of his own ship.
In the English Localization, in order to unlock the Three Secrets, you need to attain the "Vyse the Legend" Swashbuckler rating. It's unkown if this is the case for the Japanese version because many Japanese sites say that in order to unlock it, one would have to go to select game shops to get the special data downloaded onto their memory card (if that's the only way, sucks for them). Downloaders also got a free Eternal Arcadia Legends-themed sticker from the store to put on their memory card. More research is needed.
